just a small town girl
Located just outside London in the town of Guildford, Anderton's is a single, family-run music store.
Guildford has a population of 77,000, similar to the size of Mandurah here in WA, half the size of Woolongong in NSW, and third the size of Geelong in Victoria.
According to their About Us page, Andertons was founded by father Harry and son Peter in 1964 at the height of the 60's music boom.
they took the content train going anywhere
With a cutting edge approach to early adoption of ecommerce and social media in the early 2000s, they have invested in content over the long term.
The result is an audience that rivals companies 10x or even 100x their size.
For comparison, Guitar Centre is the largest music store operator in the USA with over 300 stores. With 1.1 million youtube subscribers, Guitar Centre is competing directly for views, engagement and ultimately sales with a single music store in regional England.
The most famous guitar brand of all, Fender, has 3.6 million youtube subscribers. That's only 3 times more than Andertons, from a company that has 3,000 employees and annual revenue of $173 million.
don't stop believin... in content
The store's YouTube channel is not just about showcasing products but about creating engaging, informative content that builds relationships with viewers. They offer a mix of gear reviews, Q&A sessions, unboxing videos, and in-depth discussions on musical equipment, such as guitars and effects pedals.
Aside from the main Andertons Music Co channel, they now also have 3 other channels including;
They deliver high production values and the variety of content, including both long-form videos and short clips, which cater to different audience preferences.
Music store with Youtube channel or Youtube channel that sells stuff?
With 100 employees and still only a single physical retail store, I have to assume that their ecommerce business now dwarfs there instore sales.
Looking at branded search data, "Andertons Music" is searched around 100,000 times per month across the globe.
Let's finish with a question - is Andertons still a music store that makes videos? Or a media company that sells products? Comment your thoughts!
